Nude Beaches in Sylt, Germany

Sylt, a picturesque island in northern Germany, is one of the country’s premier destinations for naturism. Known for its long, sandy beaches and relaxed atmosphere, Sylt has embraced nude bathing since the 1920s and offers numerous official FKK (Freikörperkultur, or Free Body Culture) beaches along its 40-kilometer west coast. Every third beach section is designated clothing-optional, making naturism a common and accepted part of island life.

The most famous FKK beach on Sylt is Buhne 16, located near Kampen. As Germany’s first official nude beach, it continues to attract visitors looking for a laid-back, sociable vibe with dunes, beach cafes, and stunning ocean views. Other popular naturist spots include Westerland’s Nordseeklinik area, Samoa Beach in Rantum, and the secluded Abessinien Beach near List, each offering different atmospheres—from family-friendly to remote and peaceful.

Most beaches are well-equipped with lifeguards, restrooms, and sunbed rentals during summer months. Signage clearly marks clothing-optional zones, and respecting personal space and privacy is highly valued—photography is discouraged. Dogs are allowed on certain sections, and the natural beauty of the dunes and coastline adds to the tranquility of the nude beach experience.
