Clothing-optional and nude beaches in Australia

Ben Mack

Australia has a relaxed but regulated approach to nude beaches, with public nudity permitted only in officially designated areas. Each state sets its own rules, and naturist beaches are clearly signposted. Popular clothing-optional beaches include Lady Bay Beach in Sydney, Maslin Beach near Adelaide (Australia’s first official nude beach), and Cow Bay in Queensland. Many are scenic, secluded, and attract a mix of locals and tourists.

Naturism is legal only in designated zones; public nudity elsewhere can result in fines. Beaches are typically family-friendly, with basic amenities, and respectful behavior is expected. Overall, Australia offers a small but welcoming nude beach scene in a beautiful coastal setting.
