Clothing-optional and nude beaches in California, USA

California has several well-known nude beaches, mostly concentrated in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Santa Cruz region, with a few options elsewhere along the coast. Black’s Beach in San Diego is the most famous, offering a long stretch of sand and a tolerant attitude toward nudity. In Northern California, the north end of Baker Beach in San Francisco and San Gregorio Beach near Half Moon Bay are both established clothing-optional spots, the latter being especially popular and spacious.

Other favorites include Pirates Cove near San Luis Obispo, Laguna Creek Beach, and Bonny Doon Beach near Santa Cruz, where nudity is either accepted or quietly tolerated. Los Angeles County notably lacks legal nude beaches due to stronger enforcement of local ordinances.

Nude zones are typically located in the quieter, more secluded ends of these beaches, and visitors should always pay attention to posted regulations since statewide public nudity is technically prohibited but often socially accepted in certain locations.
